Microsoft CrowdStrike outage workaround

What do I need to know? A major IT outage has affected systems globally, involving both Microsoft and CrowdStrike. The issue began with a software update from CrowdStrike that has caused Windows based machines to restart and blue screen. This has led to widespread disruptions, impacting businesses and organisations worldwide. Microsoft has been working to restore normal service and is investigating the incident to prevent future occurrences. For the latest updates, you can check Microsoft's service health status page. There has also been a separate Microsoft Azure outage, caused by a configuration change, this appears to be have had a knock-on effect to 365 services as well, however we believe this is localised to the US.

What exactly is CrowdStrike?

CrowdStrike is a provider of cyber security software which detects and blocks hacking threats and is very popular worldwide so the outage has affected IT systems in multiple businesses such as banking, airlines and media outlets.

What do I need to do?

If you do not use CrowdStrike then there is nothing to do at this stage, 3rd party providers who use CrowdStrike can apply the readily available mitigation for the issue; so if you have a service impacted by this it will be fixed in due course. We are working with our customers that are affected, the number of which is thankfully minimal. The issue is specific to Falcon Sensor, which is the main agent software they use to provide the service, and is not impacting Mac or Linux operating systems.
